Safety First! Electric Love's safety guidelines

Just 2 days away from the first ever Electric Love Music Festival at Cheam Fishing Village, and we'd like to encourage all patrons to note the following guidelines:

1. For your safety, please use the designated car parking areas and be alert to all vehicle movements on site.

2. Use marked pathways on site to avoid uneven ground, brambles and treefall.  After dark, flashlights may be necessary to enhance visibility.

3. Be aware that there will be absolutely no river access, as river speed is unpredictable.

4. Keep away from the river embankment as it drops steeply to fast moving water.

5. Avoid areas marked for electrical cables as well as backstage areas.

6. Please adhere to the no fires policy.

7. Also in effect is a "no drugs or alcohol" policy.  Vehicles will be searched on entry.

8. Backstage and onstage access will not be permitted as structures are built to comply with strict safety standards.

9. Security, first aid, and harm reduction teams will be working on site to help provide a positive event experience for both patrons and performers.  In the event of an emergency, these teams will manage relocation and treatment of patrons, should this be necessary.

10. Food vendors have been screened to meet health and safety standards.

11. Waste management has been contracted to meet sanitation specifications and ensure adequate facilities.

12.  Water on site has been tested and safety status will be available available closer to August 1st.

13. Please be considerate of staff and fellow patrons so that this festival experience will be memorable for everyone.

Also, please remember to bring sunscreen, bug spray, a big shady hat and plenty of water! The sun gods are with us this weekend and we want everyone to have a great time in the healthiest possible way!

Artist Profile: Average Gypsy

Average Gypsy are the very definition of Electric Love: they're a talented and innovative DJ duo who connect through the love of music. Producing and performing, they're rapidly carving out a niche for themselves in the EDM scene, and we can't wait to see what these electric lovers bring to our stages August 1.

Electric Love: How long have you been making music?

Average Gypsy: We started DJ'ing together two years ago.  As for producing music, we got Ableton a year ago and started to mess around with it a bit then.  It wasn't until about 6 months ago that we really started to focus on producing, sourced out an excellent teacher to show us the ropes and made a rad little studio in our house.  We haven't released anything yet but do have a really big remix coming out soon with a quadruple platinum Canadian artist that we are over the moon about!

Electric Love: What is your specific area of expertise?

Average Gypsy: Our expertise is definitely in spinning underground house music.  We are completely obsessed with UK garage and anything that has a sexy wobble to it.....nu disco, future bass, deep house and tropical house too.  We've played a lot of shows together in the past two years and for some very versatile crowds, so we have learned how to read the room and to play to the energy in it....which means feeding them what they want, but only once in a while, the rest of the time, taking them on a journey, teaching them a lesson and acquiring them a taste.

Electric Love: What are some of the accomplishments you've achieved in your field?

Average Gypsy: We are still pretty new to the scene as a DJ duo so every day gets better for us.  We just finished doing goal setting for the next four years and we have big plans for the future. For right now, we are stoked that we are playing every weekend for the entire summer, we've been asked to remix a track by a famous musician, we've played along side some pretty huge names like Steve Aoki, Tiesto and Kastle, we're playing on two radio stations later this summer, we just got booked to open for some big headliners in the Fall that haven't been announced yet, we have a few resident spots in Vancouver and have headlined our own shows many times. This past weekend we got to DJ for Kendrick Lammar's homie, YG Hootie, at a backstage after party at Pemberton Music Festival...right after Skrillex! We make new strides every day :) We are very fortunate that we share such a deep connection, being a couple and being in love, we are always together, always practicing, always planning and always progressing. Our fans can really see that we are passionate about what we do and about each other, they can feel the love we put into the music <3

Electric Love: What are you currently working on?

Average Gypsy: We are working on fine tuning our production skills before we release our first remix, watch for it come September.  Summertime is so busy with shows, so we spend a lot of time finding, getting to know and organizing our music.  We are also working on 3 new mixes.

Electric Love: What about playing at Electric Love Music Festival are you most excited about?

Average Gypsy: Electric Love is unique because it's the only one-day, all-night festival happening and we have the absolute pleasure playing our favorite festival time slot: the very last one! We can't wait to rock the main stage with all the weekend warriors <3 <3 <3.

Exclusive Interview: Pegboard Nerds!

It was an honor to catch up with the genre-bending, world-travelling Pegboard Nerds for a few questions and, in their words, some "bad/dry Scandinavian humor." Check out what the talented producers have to say about their upcoming projects, their favorite places, and life on the road.

Electric Love: Do you have any collaborations coming up?

Pegboard Nerds: Yes, but we don’t think we can say with who yet. Lots of exciting stuff though! What we can say is that they are Monstercat artists

Electric Love: Do you have any new releases to anticipate this year?

Pegboard Nerds: Yes, many! We are taking some time off touring to more consistently release tunes the rest of the year, and setting up releases for next year as well.

Electric Love: What was it like working with Excision on Bring The Madness?

Pegboard Nerds: It was fun! It was a bit of back and forth, as it originally was a remix for a Destroid track. Due to various commitments it took a long time and after a while Jeff suggested it made more sense to do it as a collab, and with an original rap on it. We feel like the end result reflects both of our styles.

Electric Love: What would be your go-to synthesizer? What would be your go-to plug-in?

Pegboard Nerds:

Go-to synth: Serum
Go-to plugin: FabFilter ProQ2

Electric Love: Where is your favourite place to perform in the world?

Pegboard Nerds: Any place where we can make the crowd, big or small, go nuts to our music! If you absolutely want a specific location, Red Rocks last year was an amazing experience! But we have lots of favorite places, for various reasons.

Electric Love: Do you prefer writing music on the road or in the studio?

Pegboard Nerds: Definitely in the peace and calm of the studio!! But today’s life as a touring DJ necessitates writing a lot on the road, so we got used to that too. Writing on the road does help in actually finishing tracks though, because we get excited and want to play them out at our next show, then do edits and fixes, and then play the updated version at the next show after that, etc.

Electric Love: When did you start DJing?

Alex:  Apart from some messing around in my youth I basically started DJing when we had our first show as Pegboard Nerds.

Michael: I started radio DJ'ing at a local radio station, playing acid house back in 1988. Had my first official club gig in 1991.

Electric Love: Do you play any other instruments?

Alex: I play piano/synth and a little guitar. Or anything that makes a sound! Pocket synthesizers, the living room table, water bottles.

Michael: I only play the recorder and I can press play on a CDJ.

Electric Love: Who was your main mentor when you were first learning?

Alex:  At the very first I had none and had to figure a lot of stuff out myself, then Stephan Groth (Apoptygma Berzerk) taught me a lot, and then it was Michael later on!

Michael: I started back when there was no YouTube tutorials (early 90's) so it took me a couple of years to learn to program a TR-909.

Electric Love: Where do you see yourself in the next year?

Pegboard Nerds: We wanna take ourselves to the next level, both music-wise and performance-wise! We also want to “focus” our music more, and a bit less of the random genre-jumping from track to track. And that is what we’re gonna work on in the coming months. Hopefully we can do another big tour, where we can bring some of our friends as supporting acts.

Electric Love: What are you looking forward to about playing Electric Love, a small festival in the heart of a beautiful valley?

Pegboard Nerds: Playing our new music and old “classics”, meeting the people there, and Canada is such a nice country!
Electric Love: How would you describe your presence online? What elements of your personalities come through via social media?

Pegboard Nerds: Sometimes sporadic, I guess, haha.. Some of our bad/dry Scandinavian humor definitely comes through. Our hate for bad airline and airport experiences. Our love for good food.

Noble Eightfold Path: Leave No Trace

The spirit of Electric Love Music Festival is one of sustainability - we want to take good care of our natural spaces so we can enjoy them for years to come. A recent trip to Cheam Fishing Village left us both breathless and inspired: not only taken in by the beauty of the surroundings but also inspired to dedicate our time, energy and vision to preserving this amazing space.
