#604SPOTLIGHT no.1 : LEVRIGE

One of our goals at Electric Love is to provide opportunities for local artists to showcase and share their work with the community. We think local talent is important, so we reached out to some Electric Love performers who live in the 604 area code for our #604Spotlight series. For our first post in the series we got to chat with the Vancouver based duo Levrige who will who will be making their Electric Love debut this year.

Levrige is a Bass Music Duo formed in 2015 by JF Killah and Erski from the SHAHDj's Crew, Vancouver's most well known Drum and Bass collective. Their productions and sets showcase a variety of genres in the Bass Music Spectrum. Drawing from genres such as Dub, Reggae, Hip-Hop, Halftime, Juke, Future, Grime, Trap, Jungle and DnB, their music comes together in a beautiful synthesis of percussion and bass.

How long have you been performing? Did you start producing before or after you started performing? Do you think this impacted your outlook towards creating music? If so, why?

We formed Levrige a little over a year ago and a half as an outlet for our productions, even though we had been collaborating together for years before. Individually J.F.Killah and Erski have been DJ'ing for a combined 30 years. Being DJ's first definitely influences our productions, the dance floor is always in our minds when it comes to writing in the studio.

What gear do you use when performing?

Our live show is pretty standard DJ gear (2X Tech 1200s or 2XCDJS & High Quality Mixer), other than that we prefer to have 3 CDJ's so we can mix quickly.

What about when you produce or compose? Could you give us a little bit of insight into your process?

We use Logic X with a select few plugins, along with a couple pieces of hardware like our Virus synth and Maschine. For the most part, we try to keep things simple. The process itself involves us both bouncing ideas off of each other, we're both present during the writing process. J.F.Killah has had a lot of piano and music theory training so writing riffs comes pretty natural to her.

Most people have one or two iconic moments that inspires one to follow along with their musical path. Have you had such an experience? If so, when and where did it occur and how did it impact you?

Releasing with Hospital Records was a pretty big deal for us. Ivy Lab playing one of our tunes on Noisia Radio was pretty wicked too.

What are the top 3 influences that you feel have helped shape your sound?

Alix Perez, Fracture, Hyroglifics

What are your 3 favorite artists that don't sound like you at all but have still have had a significant impact on you?

Sully, Knautic & Dark Arps

Do you have any sort of pre-performance routine to prepare yourself? Could you tell us a little bit about it?

We usually just relax for a moment with a beer

What are your three favorite up and comers in your local community? What in particular do you like about what they are doing with their music?

Hard to call him up and coming but Myles Away's tunes right now are on fire. Abstrakt Sonance too. Also, our buddy Pihms is writing some awesome 130 bpm stuff atm.

What is best and/or most memorable performance you have had before?

Playing Outlook Festival in Croatia was pretty awesome even if it did start to rain. Diversity was pretty amazing last summer too.

What is the best way for fans to engage with and keep up with you? Is there a specific social network in which you are more active or are you easier to interact with through more traditional means like E-mail or at a show?

Facebook (@levrige) and Instagram (@levrige_beats) are the 2 we use the most. Plus Soundcloud has all our music there as well. We're really easy to get along with, email or coming up before or after a show is totally cool.

One final question, What excites you the most about playing or going to Electric Love this year?

The lineup looks awesome, lots of great headliners and local friends getting the spotlight.

Thanks! We appreciate you taking the time to answer these questions. As someone who got into the industry after you I have always looked up to the way you conduct yourselves on and off the stage and out and about in the community. All of your successes have been well deserved and I know there will be plenty more career milestones coming for the two of you and Levrige. I look forward to catching my first Levrige set at #ELF2017.
