Artist Profile: Prada West
Prada West is young, ambitious and ready to let loose. The Ephin/Stompdown artist not only has the grit to express some heady topics, but also the dedication to see his talent through to fruition. Electric Love's Racquel had some words with Prada about his musical origins, his touring plans, and getting to the hearts of the fans.
Electric Love: How did you get started in music? What inspired you to get your career going as a rapper?
Prada West: First of all, I've always had a deep love for music, ever since a child. My father is a professional drummer, and still plays till this day. I remember as a child my mom would always turn on the radio to watch me dance, and boogie around the house when I was really young. I got started in music around 2006, when i was inspired by a tattoo artist of mine while being tattooed, and talking about hip hop and the state of it. We joked about creating comedy tracks, and from there i had tried to write some funny lines and sparked an interest for my self to start writing more. I knew before then that i wanted to pursue hip hop though, just didn't. I wrote material for a while but still didn't take it serious until 2010, when i did my first live performance. From there, it started to get real!
Electric Love: What are some current projects you're working on this summer that you want fans to know about? (Song releases, touring, music videos etc.)
Prada West: I am always working on new material, and for this summer I have a Canadian tour, not all of Canada, but just some of Ontario, and some of Alberta, and BC as well. I also have a few videos planned, two of which are from my latest album titled, Down as Ground. There is also a new album in the works, which i do not have a release date for at this time, and will disclose the title in future reference. I am also touring Europe in late September into October!
Electric Love: What do you personally or what does your music bring to the table that sets you apart from the rest out there in the rap scene?
Prada West: I feel that I differ from the majority of all other MCs for the simple reason - I represent the struggle and overcoming the hurt and pain in the hearts of people who can relate to the situation(s) that I, or someone close to me have been through. As well as staying humble, and conversing with the majority of fans that i can.
Electric Love: What is your message/advice to other musical artists out there today who are hustling to make their mark in this ever-changing and challenging industry that is the music industry?
Prada West: Only thing i can suggest for all upcoming artists is, to stay focused and stay on your grind. It normally doesn't happen over night.
Electric Love: What is your wildest/most interesting festival, tour, or performance story?
Prada West: Wildest tour story is when, i was on the 2012 SDK tour with the squad, and we had a HUGE rumble out front of the venue in Kamloops BC. It was eventful nonetheless. Haha
Electric Love: What is your secret to engaging a crowd and getting them hyped up at a large festival/show?
Prada West: Well, i f i were to disclose that, it wouldn't be a secret anymore now would it? Haha Just playing, best way to get the crowd hype, is by engaging in conversation with them and cracking jokes, as well as having crowd interacting hooks in your songs!
Electric Love: What are you looking forward to the most about the Electric Love Music Festival?
Prada West: Networking with industry people, as well as performing in front of hopefully a huge crowd! I love being up on stage and having a hype crowd in front of me!
